Admit it! We are advancing with time, but our hearts still beat for those old vibes. We are attracted to vintage and miss it from time to time. Or maybe we need a back-to-basics day to reconnect with nature and brew at camp.

Cup of coffee

Coffee brewing has been with us for a long time – by long, I mean it is even older than our great-grandparents. And so, without our current technology, how did they prepare their coffee? Here are some of the methods they used to have one of our favorite beverages:

Cowboy Coffee

Howdy Yo! You probably imagined someone drinking this coffee in the wild and your imagination might, as well, have occurred. That is because this coffee can be prepared anywhere if you have enough heat, water, and coffee. Here’s how:

Serving: 1 cup

Time: 10 to 15 minutes

Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:15

Ingredients:

1 cup Water

1/15 cup or 1 tablespoon of Ground Coffee (preferably coarse)

You may order coffee beans from us. We can also grind it for you, for free.

Directions:

  1. Put water in a pot and bring it to a boil.

  2. Remove the boiling water from heat and let it sit for about a minute to 5 minutes.

  3. Pour coffee grounds onto the hot water and stir.

  4. Brew it for 4 to 5 minutes and stir.

  5. Let it simmer for about 2 minutes to let the coffee grounds settle.

  6. Carefully transfer coffee in a cup.

  7. Sip, Drink and Enjoy!

Tips:

  1. Cool down water longer for darker roasts.

  2. You may sprinkle a bit of cold water to let the coffee grounds settle quicker before transferring in a cup.

  3. You may use a strainer and skip step number 5.

  4. We recommend coarse coffee beans so you can strain grounds easier.

  5. Coffee to water ratio can be tweaked based on your preference.

Kopi Tubruk

All the way from Indonesia, Kopi Tubruk is oftentimes associated with Turkish coffee. Both are decoction methods, but the latter is brewed in a different process and pot (ibrik). Instead, it is similar with the cupping method used to grade coffees. So let’s go brew:

Serving: 1 cup

Time: 7 to 10 minutes

Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:20

Ingredients:

1 cup of Water

1/20 cup or 2 teaspoons of Ground Coffee (preferably fine or medium)

Directions:

  1. Put 2 teaspoons of coffee to a cup.

  2. Put water in a bot and bring to a boil.

  3. Transfer boiling water to the cup with coffee.

  4. Stir then wait for about 4 minutes for the coffee to settle at the bottom of the cup.

  5. Remove remaining crust of coffee grounds floating.

  6. Sip, Drink and Enjoy!

Tips:

  1. We recommend fine or medium beans because they are denser making them less likely to float.

  2. Coffee to water ratio can be tweaked based on your preference.
